UDG News

Dear UDG Members,

First of all, please, find below the message of Wladyslaw Piskorz to you concerning the CityStar Award and the topic and deadline of the new application.

I would like to inform you that on 23 July 2011, Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, and the President of the RegioStars Jury Ann Mettler, executive Director of the Brussels think thank Lisbon Council, announced the winners of the "RegioStars Awards" 2011 at the Regions for Economic Change Annual Conference in Brussels. The winner in category 3 "CityStar - Promoting sustainable energy in cities" is Amsterdam Smart City (Netherlands). The winner in category 4 "CityStar - Integrated, clean urban transport projects" is Innovative and sustainable mobility in Funchal (CIVITAS MIMOSA), Madeira (Portugal).

As already announced some time ago, the CityStar category for the 2012 Awards will be "Integrated strategies for the development of deprived urban areas". As this is very relevant theme in the context of the urban dimension of cohesion policy and the Leipzig Charter, I would be grateful if you could spread this information in your country and among urban stakeholders. The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 July 2011.

Secondly, we would like to take this opportunity to say good-bye to you as Hungarian EU presidency and thank you for all your support you offered us during these 6 months. We hope you have found our common work useful. May we ask you to provide us some feedback if you disseminate the documents on climate change/demography within your country and/or initiate further debates on these topics.

Finally, we wish all the success to the Polish presidency for their presidency programme, especially to the debate and negotiations on the future cohesion policy.

Hope to see you soon at the Polish events.

Best regards,
