This year two projects were awarded 1st Prize:

“Proyecto Madrid Centro" Central Madrid Project (Spain)
Prof. José Mª Ezquiga Domínguez, Prof. Juan Herreros, Prof. Salvador Perez Arroyo.
Ezquiaga Arquitectura, Sociedad y Territorio S.L.
The project seeks innovative approaches to physical planning and it demonstrates a high degree of awareness of the implications of interventions in the physical fabric for social, economic and environmental issues. It is especially interesting to note how the project recognises the implications of physical intervention for the development of the city’s identity and culture.

The Garden City- La Cité Jardin ;- Jardin Plessis Robinson (France)
Xavier Bohl – Atelier Xavier Bohl
Based on a winning scheme from 2000, the Jardin Plessis Robinson at the Ile de France is implemented to replace a large and largely dysfunctional housing estate built in the 1930’s. The project reintroduces the local socially and functionally diversified suburban village to replace the monotonous low quality housing stock of the existing commuter town. As such it represents a shift in the strategic approach to urban development in which the importance of communities is recognised.

Three projects have been awarded a special mention by the Jury:

“Port Lillo Masterplan” (Belgium)
David Verhoestraete - CLUSTER Landscape and Urbanism, in cooperation with Grontmij Belgium
This project deserved a special mention because of its success in ensuring that engineering solutions to climate change - in this instance the dam on the river Scheldt - can be mediated through an inter-disciplinary approach in a manner that respects architectural and cultural heritage as well as landscape character.

“The Peace Bridge” (Ireland)
Mary MacIntrye, Maura Fox, Andree Mc Nee & Malachy McCarron. Department of Environment, Planning and Local Government.
The Peace Bridge is an example of how urban planning can be a catalyst for physical as well as social, and cultural regeneration. While it bridges a gap by providing easy physical access in a sustainable manner between formerly deeply divided communities, it is also an important contribution to the peace process in Northern Ireland.

“PRAU PROGRAMME” - PROGRAMME PRAU (Spain)
Juan Luis de las Rivas Sanz, Esther Fernández González - Instituto Universitario de Urbanística- Universidad de Valladolid
This programme shows how effective regional coordination of local and municipal planning this can be successfully achieved in practice. PRAU not only provided Regional guidance on the development of settlements in less-favoured areas, but also provided a mechanism, through which the completion of project briefs and through monitoring and direction the projects can be realised.
